Hanumath Vratham, also known as HanumanVratam or Hanumad Vratha, is a popular vratham dedicated to Lord Hanuman. It is observed on Traydashi in Shukla Paksha of Margashira month especiallyin Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and some other parts of South India. It is performed by devotees for their good health and prosperity of family members.
Hanumad Vratham is observed with utmost devotion in Hanuman temples of South India. It is the third day of Panchaka vratham in Margashirsha masam (Margashira Panchak vrat begins on Vaikunta Ekadashi and ends on Margashirsha Purnima). Lord Hanuman is worshipped with Shodashopachara Puja (16 steps of Puja) and offered special naivedyam.
HanumanVratam is observed on Margashirsh Krishna Trayodasi. In 2012, Hanuman Vrata date is December 25. As per Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtraand Gujaratit falls on Margashira Shudda Trayodashi. This vrata is observed for good health and prosperity.
During Hanumath vratam, Lord Hanuman is worshipped with Shodashopachar puja. Hanuman vrat katha is recited in puja and naivedyam is offered to the Lord. Hanuman Astottaram, Sundara kanda and some other Hanuman stotras are chanted as part of puja. Performing Hanmad vrata keeps you healthy, free from all fears, psychological tensions and even successful in studies. It is observed by married couples, unmarried devotees, children and elder people.
Famous Hanuman temples in India where Hanuman vrata is performed with much gusto are – Sankat Mochan Hanuman temple in Varanasi, Jhaku temple in Shimla, Kondagattu Anjaneya swamy temple in Karimnagar districtof Andhra Pradesh and Surendrapuri Panchamukha Anjaneya swamy temple near Yadagirigutta in Andhra Pradesh.
It is to note that in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Hanuman Jayanthi is observed in Margazhi month. As per Gujarat and Maharashtra calendars, Hanuman jayanti is celebrated on Chaitra Purnima, the full moon day in the month of Chaitra. Andhra Pradesh and Karanataka people celebrate Hanuman Jayanthi on Vaishakha Krishna paksha Dashami.
During Hanuman vratham, Lord Ganapati is worshipped before proceeding for Hanuman puja. Here is the Hanuman vratam puja procedure:
In a sanctified puja mandapam, Lord Ganapati and Anjaneya idols are placed. The puja mandapam is decoratedsimilarly to other pujas. Lord Ganapati is worshipped initially to get rid of(vignas) obstacles. Lord Ganesh is worshipped with simple puja vidhanam. Then actual Hanuman puja starts.
Kalash or Kalasham, the clay-pot or bronze pot filled with water, be kept before the idol of Hanuman and a diya or deepam be lighted. Dhoop batti or incense sticksor Agarvatti should be lighted. After that Puja Sankalpam is recited. Shodashopachar puja is offered (the main steps include – Shuddodaka snanam, panchamrita abhisekam, pushpabhishekam, naivedyam, and aarti). During the Hanuman vrat pooja, Hanuman Chalisa, Sankat mochan Hanuman stotram, Hanuman Asthakam, some other Anjaneya stotras are recited. After the puja is over, Pradakshina (circumambulations) is offered to Hanuman and flowers and akshata (consecrated rice) are showered.
